Character
In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens, a fourteen year old girl grows up on a peach farm in South Carolina with her abusive father, T-Ray. As a child she was treated with no respect or love from her father. Her father acted as if it was Lilys fault her mother died and he continued to make her believe her mother was leaving her. " The truth is, your sorry mother ran off and left you. The day she died, she'd come back to get her things, that's all." What T-Ray had said, stayed in her mind forever. Lily was naive but did know this was not true even though a part of her believed it was. Lily wanted her dad just to love her and treat her like she belonged. She knew the way her father treated her was not right and she had to get away.

Lily grew up in a time period of the Civil Right's, where whites and blacks were treated differently. Whites were superior to blacks and Lily did not believe in this. She became friends and lived with the calender sisters, who were black. The reason for this is because she believed they had some kind of relationship with her mother in the past. Lily was given a hard time about living with them by a police officer. Lily did not care she loved them and she wanted to be loved. Lily started understanding how blacks were treated so differently during the time she lived with them.

Lily grew and learned a lot living with the calender sisters. The sisters were everything T-Ray wasn't. They were her family to her not just a place to stay. Lily became a strong person because of all the situations she faced. She found herself and found people who loved her. She knew she was a better person without T-Ray in her life. Even though she longed for his love, she knew she had all the love she needed from the sisters." I go back to the one moment when I stood in the driveway with small rocks and clumps of dirt around my feet and looked back at the porch. And there they were. All these mothers. I have more mothers than any eight girls off the street. They are the moons shining over me."
